George St-Pierre looked like he may have been returning to the UFC, to fight on 206 in Toronto this December 2016. But it has fallen apart due the promotion’s new owners or at least dew to the new owners not continuing the deal that was being presented by the Fertitas. George St-Pierre is now a Free agent.
“You heard it right,” St-Pierre told The MMA Hour. “I’m a free agent.”
“It was like a shock, because we felt like we were making progress, we were almost there.
“The reason I wanted to go back and fight is because I feel right now that i’m at my best. I’m truly confident I can beat the guys that are champions right now. I’m that confident. At least I’m a free man. Now, I know I’m free. I have other options. I’m not caught up legally with a contract. I’m a free man.
“To [come back], it would have been a win-win situation. I think now what happened with this situation, the biggest loser is the fans. I’m a loser. The UFC is a loser. Even the UFC is a loser. They would have made good money.”
“The reason I wanted to go back and fight is because I feel right now that i’m at my best.”
But if we know anything about the UFC, Bellator and any other top MMA promotion being released from your contract doesn’t work the way George claims it has, ie you don’t just phone up your lawyer and hey presto, just ask Rampage!
The UFC have now released a statement and well ….
The statement reads: “Georges St-Pierre remains under an existing agreement with Zuffa, LLC as his MMA promoter.”
“Zuffa intends to honour its agreement with St-Pierre and reserves its rights under the law to have St-Pierre do the same.”
So we now just sit back and watch the shit storm unfold, because you know as as I do, that this little UFC / GSP contract disagreement ain’t going away any time soon.
Now the former welterweight champion has not fought inside the Octagon in three years but he is GSP and if he came back he would still be competitive for sure.. In that time he has continuously trained, promoted his various brands and sponsors and by all things internet seemed to live out a happy, healthy and prosperous time.
Some the of the main reasons for the breakdown in communication with regards to GSP would most definitely have been his sponsors. IE UFCs exclusive deal with Reebok!! Again! George makes a lot of money from a multitude of top companies , this will need to be resolved before we see him fight in the UFC again. If his lawyer is as good as George is at fighting and has somehow terminated GSP’s contract, then we can look forward to seeing him fight in Belator where his team mate McDonald recently moved to.
The UFCs new owners lost out in a fan favourite, that’s for sure.
